Is it worth buying new windows?
Today, the opportunity to reduce energy consumption is a common reason for people to start thinking about their windows. Can it possibly pay to replace them and buy new windows?
The heat seals through the window can be as large as a third
of the house's total heating. If you compare this with the fact that windows in
recent years have become up to 70% more energy-efficient than old double-glazed windows, you see that there can be large energy gains.
The streamlining is due to new technologies. Today, almost
all window manufacturers offer energy-efficient triple glazed windows and
energy-saving glass. On energy-efficient windows, two or three glasses have
been sealed with air or noble gas between the panes. The gas conducts heat
worse than air and therefore provides better insulation.
Additional energy can be saved with energy-saving glass that
has a metal coating on one side of the window that reflects heat. This means
that less heat penetrates through the window. You can have one or two
energy-saving glasses in the window cassette.
Since the glass also reflects light, the window lets in
slightly less sunlight into the room. However, this can be an advantage in the
summer when you get lower costs for cooling a room with a large window section.
U-value on old connected double-glazed windows
A classic older connected double-glazed window has a U-value
of about 2.5. But when it comes to the u-value of old connected double-glazed
windows, several aspects must be taken into account. 1. The larger the wooden
surface in the window frame, the more wood the better the value. 2. How big is
the gap between the window frame and the frame, it also affects the u-value. If
you only look at the glass itself, a value of about 3.0 is reasonable.
U-value on new windows
However, if you have old but still functioning windows, it
is more difficult to calculate a window replacement, even if the energy costs
are lower. However, since the windows affect the total energy consumption, it
may be worth looking at a window
replacement in connection with replacing, for example, a boiler or other
heating equipment. With new windows, maybe you can buy a smaller facility and
earn some of the money there.
But you can get other benefits that are at least as
important. An advantage is a quieter indoor environment with better insulation.
Less cold drafts and drafts allow you to use your home differently, and perhaps
place the elements in other places. Better functions and easier window
cleaning, and perhaps also less maintenance in the future can be great
advantages.
If you have a lot of windows, you should also consider
whether it will be very hot in the summer. Then you can also get costs and
energy consumption for cooling or ventilating during the summer. Such costs can
be lower if you choose windows with energy-saving glass that reflect solar
radiation.
